Dementia and its relationship with vitamin D

A study from the University of South Australia shows a direct relationship between dementia and Vitamin D deficiency.

Having a relative with dementia, or knowing someone with dementia today is very common.

But, did we expect that Vitamin D deficiency was one of the underlying factors of this disease, which is also one of the main causes of disability and consequently of dependency in old age?

A pioneering and innovative study from the University of South Australia shows a direct link between dementia and Vitamin D deficiency.
Low levels of Vitamin D are associated with a smaller brain volume and, therefore, with a higher risk of dementia and stroke.

Many cases of dementia could be prevented by increasing the levels of Vitamin D in the blood to 50 nmol/l.

Until now, Vitamin D deficiency in the risk of dementia or stroke had not been studied using genetics.

All body tissues have receptors for Vitamin D, including the brain, so good brain health depends on adequate amounts of Vitamin D, as does bone, muscle, and other tissues.

We can ingest vitamin D through food or through food supplements, in the event that through the diet the levels of Vitamin D in the blood are below normal.

What food supplements contain Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is found in many vitamin supplements, but we can also find it alone.

The two forms of Vitamin D available in food supplements are D2 or ergocalciferol and D3 or cholecalciferol. Both Vitamin D2 and D3 increase the concentration of Vitamin D in the blood, although Vitamin D3 could raise it more and for a longer time than Vitamin D2. Since Vitamin D is fat soluble, it is best absorbed when taken with a meal that contains some fat.

It is always a good idea to take a Vitamin D supplement, which is documented by published studies.
