Echinacea is a wildflower with purple, daisy-like flowers native to the grasslands of the central U.S. For centuries, Plains tribes used the plant to heal wounds and counteract the toxins from snakebites.
Of the nine species of Echinacea, three (Echinacea angustifolia, E. pallida and E. purpurea) were used for medicinal purposes. Echinacea contains many active ingredients.
The use of Echinacea purpurea is widespread throughout the European continent. It is one of the most researched herbs that Lamberts has, with numerous articles published on its remarkable properties.
Echinacea is rich in numerous important components. The organic phenolic compounds present in it include echinacoside (a derivative of caffeic acid), chicoric acid (in particularly high concentrations in Echinacea purpurea compared to other species), chlorogenic acid and cynarin.
Although analyses of Echinacea purpurea have provided a selection of chemical components with some pharmacological activity, it is the phenolic compounds that are used for standardization procedures.
Lamberts® advocates standardized extracts, as the extraction and concentration procedures for the active compounds ensure that the herbal product is far more potent than products based on the whole powdered plant, where nothing is done to concentrate these compounds. Lamberts uses a 200mg extract that is obtained from over 1000mg of dried, powdered herb and is therefore estimated to be up to 4 times more potent than a product containing just 200mg of powdered plant material.
Vitamin C and Zinc added to Lamberts formulation contribute to the normal functioning of the immune system.
