This move marked their foray into the then-new field of natural supplements. During this process, they crossed paths with Phillip Steinberg in Wisconsin. Steinberg, who was a certified nutritionist, was dedicated to grinding the bark of this plant to turn it into a powder suitable for encapsulation. Using it himself, he was so amazed by its effects that he decided to write several articles and a book titled ?Cat's Claw: Uncaria tomentosa, the miraculous herb of the Peruvian jungle?, highlighting its properties.
Later studies revealed that the majority of cat's claw contained pentacyclic oxindolic alkaloids (TOAs), which inhibited many of the plant's immunological benefits. However, the TOA-free variety of cat's claw was found to offer a different effect, effectively supporting immune health without overstimulating it.
