Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a very common problem.
IBS is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder. It can occur at any age and is more common in women. Its clinical course alternates between symptomatic and symptom-free periods and has a significant negative impact on quality of life.
Experts say that IBS is a multifactorial syndrome that causes intestinal disorders. The most important factors include: mood disorders (depression), stress or anxiety, having suffered from gastrointestinal infections or following a poor diet.
Scientific studies show that in IBS the intestinal microbiota is altered (dysbiosis), which is responsible for chronic low-grade intestinal inflammation and increased intestinal permeability, which causes the appearance of typical IBS symptoms.
Abdominal pain, the main symptom, is usually crampy and of variable location. There are alterations in the bowel movement rhythm: diarrhea, constipation or alternating between the two and excessive gas formation that causes abdominal distension. There may also be other symptoms.
Experts recommend following a diet low in short-chain fermentable carbohydrates or FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) for several weeks and then gradually reintroducing different foods.
