Salix alba has always been highly regarded by ancient physicians. Since 500 BC, it has been used in China as a treatment for pain and fever. In the first century AD, the great Latin naturalist Pliny the Elder attributed to its leaves the ability to contain sexual intemperance, while in the 12th century, the Benedictine mystic Ildegard of Bingen used its flowers and leaves to combat insomnia and relieve spasms related to the menstrual cycle. Thanks to the discoveries made in 1828, when a group of (European) chemists isolated salicin, the therapeutic virtues of what we know today as aspirin in the form of acetylsalicylic acid were confirmed: analgesic, antirheumatic, antispasmodic, antipyretic, tonic, sedative and haemostatic.
The increased interest in natural medicine has led many people to use White Willow as an alternative to aspirin. A double-blind study has shown that its effectiveness in treating back pain is comparable to that of aspirin; it is also useful in cases of osteoarthritis, bursitis, dysmenorrhea, muscle-tension headaches, migraines, rheumatoid arthritis and tendonitis.
Unlike acetylsalicylic acid, White Willow does not cause stomach upset, since Salicin acts in the body as a pre-drug: after oral administration, salicin is hydrolyzed at the intestinal level into glucose and saligenin, which, once in the bloodstream, are metabolized into salicylic acid. If classical phytotherapy, as described here, has made extensive use of Willow bark extracts, classical gemmotherapy did not foresee its use at all. The plant stem cells of White Willow buds, in addition to containing DNA, RNA, auxins and gibberellins, contain significant amounts (comparable to those contained in the adult plant) of acetylsalicylic acid, a plant hormone in the form of an organic acid biosynthesized from the amino acid phenylalanine.
Salicylic acid is a phenolic phytohormone with activity in growth, development, photosynthesis, transpiration and the uptake and transport of ions in plants. It is derived from the metabolism of salicin, and is a chemical component with a structure similar, but not identical, to the synthesis molecule of acetylsalicylic acid. At a botanical level, it stimulates the immune response and acts as a mild plant antibiotic.
The stem cells of White Willow buds contain various naturally occurring trace elements, including: iron, chromium, potassium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, zinc and calcium; as well as vitamins: A, B1, B2, B3 and C.
