Phytotherapy in joint pain IV

White willow. The most important components of willows are ferolic glycosides and, within them, salicin, which is found mainly in the bark and leaves. On contact with water, salicin splits into saligelin and glucose. When this saligelin is oxidized, it gives rise to salicylic acid, which is the base of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).

WHITE WILLOW

The properties that white willow (Salix alba) has to combat pain are due to the presence of salicin (it is an anti-inflammatory beta glycoside). The transformation of salicin into acetylsalicylic acid occurs in the liver through an enzymatic reaction. This acetylsalicylic acid is the most active.

Properties

Anti-inflammatory: inhibits the production of prostaglandins and thromboxanes, irreversibly inhibiting cyclo-oxygenase enzymes.
Antipyretic: Helps reduce fever by reducing the production of prostaglandins in the hypothalamus, which regulates body temperature.
Analgesic: Reduces pain by blocking the production of hormones responsible for messages transmitted to pain receptors in the brain, hence its effectiveness in migraines and pain of various origins.

Side effects and contraindications

  • Sensitivity to salicylates.
  • Active peptic ulcer
  • Third trimester of pregnancy and lactation.
  • Gastric and allergic discomfort.
  • Increases the effect of anticoagulants.

Precautions to consider

In the case of salicylates, hypersensitivity reactions are relatively common. In addition, the part of the population that is anticoagulated is quite large. These products increase the effect of anticoagulants, so these patients should be especially careful.

There are commercialized products from the bark of Salix alba that contain up to 50% salicin, which is finally metabolized into acetylsalicylic acid.

It is estimated that 240 mg is equivalent to 50 mg of aspirin. Sometimes it can cause angioedema.
