In the European Pharmacopoeia, the drug (Harpagophyti radix) is defined as cut and dried tuberous secondary roots of Harpagophytum procumbens DC and/or Harpagophytum zeyheri Decne. It must have at least 1.2% of harpagoside referred to dry drug. The Pharmacopoeia also speaks of the dry extract of Harpagóside referring to dry drug. The Pharmacopoeia also talks about the dry extract of Harpagophyto. This must have at least 1.5% harpagosides. The dry extract is prepared in water or hydroalcoholic solution.

Mechanism of action of Harpagosides:

Harpagosides inhibit COX-2 without affecting COX-1.
They inhibit TNF (tumor necrosis factor) and IL-6, mediators of cartilage destruction.
They inhibit PGE2.

 

Precautions to consider:

Harpagophyto root has shown very low toxicity. The administration of repeated doses (subacute toxicity) does not show significant results of toxicity or hepatotoxicity. Tolerability tests indicate a low incidence of adverse effects and these are mild, mainly gastrointestinal (laxative effect). However, Harpagophyto should be used with caution in case of gastric or duodenal ulcer, pregnancy, lactation and in bile duct obstruction. It can also interact with anticoagulant drugs and those used in cardiovascular conditions such as arrhythmias or arterial hypertension.
