The benefits of arnica are well known throughout history, such as: it relieves pain from trauma, sprains, bumps or minor injuries, eliminates bruises and prevents their appearance, stimulates blood circulation and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Arnica also has anti-infectious and fungicidal properties.
Harpagophytum is a perennial plant belonging to the Pedaliaceae family. It has been used since ancient times due to its wide spectrum of actions. It has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties and is often associated with the cure of back pain and headaches. The harpagosides contained in its root show great analgesic qualities against tendonitis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties have been demonstrated by studies carried out with laboratory guinea pigs, where it is clarified how the analgesic effect is present in peripheral areas with respect to the central part, while in vitro studies have shown how the action of Harpagophytum does not influence the production of prostaglandins, the molecules responsible for pain, as it does not interfere with cyclooxygenases, that is, the category of enzymes that enables their formation. Its anti-inflammatory effect, on the other hand, has been established through preclinical pharmacology studies, which have shown that this action depends on the inhibition of lipoxygenases, a series of enzymes that are responsible for synthesizing compounds called leukotrienes. In light of the proposed studies, the German European Commission has indicated that Harpagophytum procumbens DC represents an optimal treatment for dyspepsia, anorexia and degenerative pathologies of the muscular and skeletal system.
Hippocrates, in his time, appreciated the analgesic effect of the white willow. Today we know that its bark contains salicin and that in the body it is oxidized into salicylic acid; basic raw material for analgesics such as aspirin, which was once made from white willow. White willow is antipyretic, antirheumatic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibacterial and eliminates uric acid. White willow was one of the first plants to be the subject of scientific research. It is used in cases of rheumatism and arthritis, lowers fever, relieves neuralgia, headaches, colic and pain in general. Among its active ingredients, we find phenolic glycosides which are salicylic derivatives: salicin, salicortina, tremulacin, populina, fragolina; aldehydes and aromatic acids, salidroside, vanillin; salicylic and vanillic acids; the flavonoids isoquercitrin and naringin; tannins in variable amounts from 8 to 20%.
